In Ireland today most people own a mobile phone and often this is their preferred method of communication. Ballymun Partnership in conjunction with Solas Development Centre and the Ballymun Anti-Poverty Network completed research recently that substantiates this at a local level. Over 500 local people were surveyed by local people and said that they would like current channels of communication to be developed further to include text messaging for example.
In an effort to communicate more effectively with local people, Ballymun Partnership have been using this text based service and are now in a position to host this service for other local community and voluntary groups.

Ballymun Partnership in conjunction with Solas Development Centre and the Ballymun Anti-Poverty Network commissioned a piece of research which was completed in March 2006, entitled Supporting Meaningful Resident Participation in Ballymun. Ten local women were trained in research skills and methods in order to conduct the research. Over 500 people were interviewed in this process and 50 local people also took part in a vox pop in the shopping centre.
82% of people questioned felt they did not have a voice when it came to matters concerning Ballymun. A high number of respondents were unaware of services that are currently operating here in Ballymun. Finally, through the research it was claimed that the second most effective method of communication was through word of mouth, the first being through the post or newsletter.
The same local women were involved in planning this launch and it was felt that the event should be locally based and the event should try to respond to some of the findings in the research. With this in mind, organisations have been asked to host a stand in the
This event is an opportunity for local groups or organisations with local representation, to share with the community their services, their method of community representation and how the community can inform the work of that organisation.
