Ballymun Intercultural Group would like to invite you to a training workshop on "Cultural Awareness & Anti-Racism"
Date: Tuesday 22nd April ‘08
Time: 9.30 - 12.30
Location: The RECO, Sillogue Road, Ballymun
Cost: FREE
This workshop is a major step towards building the capacity of our community to respond appropriately to the needs of a multi-ethnic society.
The training is designed to:
- Raise awareness about culture and racism
- Introduce the idea of intercultural communication in Ballymun
- Facilitate the formation of ideas towards a racism-free and culture-sensitive community.

On the 11th March, Ballymun Intercultural Group (BIG) launched a research based study on the experiences of the migrant community in Ballymun. The study ‘Issues Challenges and Opportunities faced by Immigrant Communities and Services Providers in Ballymun and Surroundings Areas’ researched by Helen Fitzgerald, is the first study of its’ nature in Ballymun addressing issues facing members of minority ethnic groups from the immigrant community.

A number of legislative publications such as the Equal Status Act 2000-2004 and Promoting Equality in Intercultural Workplaces were provided in the reception area.

Fall and Recover is a dance piece choreographed by John Scott of Irish Modern Dance Theatre for 13 survivors of Torture from ten countries. The show came to the Axis Theatre, Ballymun on the final night of its tour on the 16th February.

This was a very important week in Irish society and was supported and promoted by a number of national bodies, particularly the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) and the Equality Authority. It ran from the 19th - 25th March.

Ballymun Intercultural Group hosted a coffee morning on the 10th November ('05) from 10.30am until 12.30pm in the Ballymun Partnership to mark this year’s Anti-Racist in the Workplace Week. Jennifer Wallace (pictured)of the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism spoke on the recommendations of Planning for Diversity: the National Action Plan Against Racism document and also on how employers can be more accommodating to workers from other countries.
Both community and statutory bodies signed up to the recommendations of the document. With the growing presence of minority ethnic groups in Ballymun there is a need to raise awareness of cultural diversity and to promote the positive aspects of new communities.
Anne Scully (Mercy Justice Office / Ballymun Intercultural Group) was interviewed on 106 Near Fm on the 5th November 2005. She spoke about the work of the Ballymun Intercultural Group and the (then) up and coming Anti-Racist in the Workplace Week event. International Day Against Racism was celebrated in Ballymun with the sounds of African drumming and singing in the local community arts centre 'Axis'. Alongside the African performers was a Russian folk dancer and henna hand painter.
