Ballymun Whitehall Education Fair 2010

An action packed Education Fair is taking place in Ballymun Civic Centre on Thursday 9th September 2010, from 9am-4:30pm. At 11am, the Fair will be officially opened by Minister for Lifelong Learning Seán Haughey TD with guest speakers from Ballymun who will talk about what returning to education has meant for their lives. Following this, the newly appointed President of DCU, Brian Mac Craith, will speak. Subsequently, Stephen Crowe and Luke Hislop from Ballymun will speak about returning to Education!

Ballymun Whitehall Education Fair is organised by Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership and aims to promote learning, education and training opportunities for both adults and young people of all ages right in the heart of their own community.

Meet with 40 organisations who will be giving out information on what they offer and that will be recruiting for their upcoming courses.

If you need advice on what direction to take your life or career in then the Adult Education Guidance Service of the VEC and Ballymun Job Centre Career Guidance will be on hand to sit with you and talk things over.

Almost everything showcased at Ballymun Whitehall Education Fair happens in and around the Ballymun/Whitehall area and you can join in. So make it your business to drop in as you get on with life or on your way to or from work or the school run. Ballymun Whitehall Education Fair is OPEN ALL DAY.

Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) in Trinity Comprehensive School

(NFTE) Ireland is an international non profit organisation with almost twenty years experience of teaching entrepreneurship skills to young people. “Enterprising Ballymun”, an NFTE pilot for secondary schools, provided students with the opportunity to shape and enhance their own entrepreneurial skills through the medium of enterprise . . . click here to find out more >>


Book Exchange will be back on Thursday April 1st in the Civic Centre. Once again, there will be many books to choose from and a chance to speak to other avid readers.

For those who are new to Book Exchange, the idea behind Book Exchange is to bring a book and exchange it for another for FREE! Huge numbers come out on the first Thursday of every month to choose from the extensive collection of Adult and Children’s books on offer. We are providing free books to help promote more reading in the community.

This month you will also have an opportunity to meet Breege from youngballymun.

Book Exchange returns to Ballymun Civic Centre on Thursday, April 1st. For those who can’t wait until then, call into the Partnership Offices in Ballymun Shopping Centre where we have set up a mini Book Exchange carrying a sample collection of books for you to swap and read. A New Database for the Ballymun Trainers Network!

In late 2008, a sub-group of the Ballymun Trainers Network began to research setting up a database of Trainers from the local area. This year, the Network along with the expertise of Ian Smith of Noise Multimedia has moved the database from a vision into a reality!

Schools in our community work tirelessly to promote school attendance levels. In 2008 they approached the community sector to ask for more support to improve school attendance. For this reason Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership is now co-ordinating Ballymun School Attendance Community Action Initiative a collaboration between numerous statutory, community and voluntary sector services and organisations. The Initiative comprises seven actions each with a separate lead agency and then partner agencies to take on some of the work

A Call To Action To Promote School Attendance Community-wide

On 30th November 2009 the Partnership hosted the MISS SCHOOL MISS OUT MISSED OPPORTUNITIES Conference at the AXIS arts and community resource centre, Ballymun. The event was attended by 104 delegates from around the country aswell as those working or living in the Ballymun Whitehall Area. The conference’s focus was Education – A Whole town working together and was skillfully Chaired by Fergus Finlay CEO of Barnardos . . . click here for more >>


Intergenerational Project

As you may already know, the Intergenerational Project was piloted last May in St. Josephs Senior National School. Older members of our local community visited 4th, 5th and 6th class students in their classroom to tell them what life was like when they were in school. 'A Meeting of Motivated Minds'

On November 27th, the Ballymun Trainer’s Network funded by the Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership provided a workshop on ‘How to Motivate Learners’ in the inviting environment of the Civic Chambers in Ballymun Civic Centre. Teachers get out and about in the Community

Twenty three teachers (pictured right) new to the Ballymun / Whitehall area this 2009 / 2010 academic year participated in an Introduction to the Community of Ballymun programme. This special programme is organised every year by Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership to assist teachers working in local schools to get to know a little bit more about the community in which their school is located. This helps them to make their lessons more relevant to their pupils and students as the teachers are introduced to real places, activities or services available in the community . . . click here to read more >>


A Colourful And Exciting Day For Education In Ballymun

On Thursday, September 10th, 2009 Ballymun Civic Centre transformed into a centre of education and learning as it was host to Ballymun Education Fair. The fair was organised by Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership and aimed to promote learning, education and training opportunities for both adults and young people of all ages right in the heart of their own community.

The Fair was officially launched by Minister Seán Haughey who highlighted the importance of the event for the area. This was further enhanced by two local women, Virginia Maguire and Yasmin Lee, who spoke about their return to education and how it had changed their lives and furthered their careers . . . click for more >>.

Education Working Group Writes A Submission To The Consultation On A National Strategy For Higher Education

The Higher Education Strategy Group invited submissions recently in respect of the development of the vision and objectives for Higher Education nationally. A Sub Group of Partnership’s Education Working Group got together on behalf of the Working Group to respond to this call. The call for submissions looked for detail on

  • the most significant changes you would wish to see made to Irish Higher Education and
  • the barriers or obstacles which you would identify to achievement of those objectives.
