Ballymun Childcare Working Group - The Background

In February 2006 members of the Ballymun Childcare Working Group came together to continue the process of agreeing an overall aim and objectives for the working group for 2006-2010, and to identify work priorities for 2006.

A number of key issues that arose in the discussions on the day include the following:

  • The need for the Childcare Working Group to be strategic and practical in its work.
  • The need for the Childcare Working Group to be solutions focussed, and to be clear in what it wants, how it wants it to be delivered, who should deliver it, when and how much it will cost.
  • The high level of local and national knowledge and expertise that is within the Working Group itself and the need to draw on this.

Following a very wide ranging discussion that covered topics including the needs for wide spread support for all those involved with children and families, the Governments new childcare support programme and the issue of quality, a broad range of objectives was agreed.

Agreed Aim of the Working Group

Recognising the critical impact of quality childhood care and education services, the Ballymun Childcare Working Group aims to provide a co-ordinated and comprehensive approach to services for all children and families in Ballymun.

Agreed Objectives

  • To build the capacity of existing organisations and structures to deliver supports to parents (including support to develop parenting skills), families, children and other care providers.
  • To provide relevant and targeted information to parents, children and families, providers, community groups etc.

Task Groups

Following this discussion, individual task groups were identified to decide specific actions for each objective.
