'A Meeting of Motivated Minds'

On November 27th, the Ballymun Trainer’s Network funded by the Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership provided a workshop on ‘How to Motivate Learners’ in the inviting environment of the Civic Chambers in Ballymun Civic Centre. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. James Campbell of the Institute of Cultural Affairs, Brussels.

28 trainers from Ballymun and the surrounding area took part in the event. Through the use of the Technology of Participation the group formulated a response on what we believed the defining characteristics of motivation to be. They are:

  • To develop and sustain positive group relationships;
  • To have student focused goals;
  • To communicate processes clearly;
  • To ensure happy learning;
  • To have a flexible and adaptable approach;
  • To provide continuous feedback, reviews and evaluations;
  • To connect with students needs and interests;
  • To use realistic achievable processes;
  • To encourage mutual respect between tutor and student;
  • To use and have access to appropriate enabling resources.

The afternoon session gave everyone the opportunity to share examples of how they motivate learners in their organisation. Overall, the day was very successful and gave trainers necessary tools that they can use to motivate their learners. The day ended on an optimistic note as we realised that there is fantastic work going on in Ballymun and by sharing our skills and resources, we can help to motivate our learners. If you would like further information on the day or indeed would like access to more of the findings of the day, do not hesitate to contact me by mailing elizabeth@ballymun.org or by telephoning 01-8423612.
