Intergenerational Project

As you may already know, the Intergenerational Project was piloted last May in St. Josephs Senior National School. Older members of our local community visited 4th, 5th and 6th class students in their classroom to tell them what life was like when they were in school. The project was very successful so the Ballymun Whitehall Area Partnership invited schools to take part again this academic year.

In the last month, five volunteers received training in child protection and storytelling. Since then, our volunteers have visited seven classes in total, in both Holy Spirit Girls School and St. Joseph’s Senior National School. They told the students about what life was like for them when they were growing up. They spoke about the games they played, the food they ate and what Christmas was like when they were children. When the students had asked all their questions, they were each given a pack containing a local History Trails Map and a questionnaire. Accompanied by their volunteer and their teachers, the students went on a walk of Ballymun answering questions as they went. It was very successful and thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. We look forward to visiting Scoil and tSeachtar Laoch and Our Lady of Victories Boys School in January 2010!

If you are over 55 and would like to become a volunteer, or if you would like us to visit your school in the New Year, do not hesitate to contact me by mailing elizabeth@ballymun.org or telephoning 01-8423612.
