Annual Dublin Childminders Conference

The Annual Dublin Childminders Conference took place in the Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley, on May 10 this year.

We had a great representation of childminders from all over Dublin city and county in attendance.

The conference was chaired by Noirin Hayes, senior lecturer in Child Development and Early Childhood Education at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

The guest speaker was David Coleman, a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with children and their families. He presents the popular RTE television show, Families in Trouble.

Dr. Jean Whyte, Senior Research Fellow in Trinity College spoke on Valuing Childhood: Development and Diversity.

Moira OMara, Head of the Childcare Directorate, explained the National Guidelines for Childminders and Voluntary Notification.

A childminder from Galway, Jean Register, who has submitted her voluntary notification, was most impressive. She has been childminding for 25 years and is a member of the Childminding Forum in Galway.

The final talk was from an IPPA speaker, who gave many ideas on the importance of Outdoor Play.

After a sizeable lunch, the participants broke up into smaller groups and workshops on subjects ranging from creative play to assertiveness took place.

This event was organized by the Dublin-based Childminding Advisory Officers, who are always available for advice and training, and was hugely successful.
