Traveller Employment Action

During 2006 Ballymun Partnership supported a programme aimed at promoting employment including self employment opportunities for Traveller men based locally in Ballymun. A programme was developed to encourage Traveller men obtain a HGV driving license and Safe Pass certification.

Ten Traveller men based in the St Margarets, Ballymun had shown an interest in taking part if a training course could be arranged .The group had business ideas included landscaping, repair service, and a bus transport company. All these ideas could be developed further with a full HGV or D class license for bus transport.

Ballymun Partnership worked with Bill Abom (The Nurture Programme) to developed a proposal aimed at assisting the group take theory test, driving lessons, safe pass training and the relate tests. The proposal was submitted to FAS for funding and approved as a pilot project.

One year on the men have completed the training with a large number gaining certification in both HGV driving and Safe Pass. Travact have engaged with a number of the men on their business ideas and both Travact and Ballymun Partnership continually offer business advice to pre start ups and new business.
