To celebrate World Refugee Day on the 20th June Ballymun Intercultural Group hosted a coffee morning in the Ballymun Partnership. World Refugee Day is about remembering the millions of refugees around the globe and also in Ireland.
As different as they are from each other, one thing connects them all: hope for a better future and a chance to restore lasting peace to their lives. That evening their contribution was celebrated and recognized at an award event in the Dublin City Council offices in Wood Quay.
Locally B.I.G showed a DVD highlighting some of the issues around media portrayal of Asylum Seekers and Refugees and dispelling some of the myths and misinformation surrounding the asylum process. Adrian Cristea from the Vincentian Refugee Centre spoke about his experience as a settlement officer and answered the questions people had. Near Fm, a local radio station, broadcast a programme that evening highlighting the event.
More information on human rights is available from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees web site.
